As promised, I have finally collected our stack of debt and the balances on each account. I will say I was aware of all the accounts and they are all current, but I was not necessarily aware of the balance and/or interest rate on everything. That was definitely insightful!
You might wonder how we accumulated so much debt. Well, some of it I brought into our marriage, some of it Eli brought into the marriage and some of it we racked up together. I would not categorize ourselves as "out of control" spenders though. We have always had a budget and have always worked to stay within the budget. Our debt came mostly from emergencies and our (my) love of animals. I had a very sickly dog who was literally my lifesaver and I paid thousands to try to save her life. Also, the family loan #1 is from medical bills and a down payment on my townhouse (more on that later). I do sound like I'm justifying things...I'm aware. Maybe I am. Not really sure.
So, without further explanation, we have the grand totals (from smallest to largest):
Car: $280.79
Family Loan #2: $3,040.00
BOA CC: $9,559.61
GE Online: $9,669.07
Chase CC: $11,938.49
Truck: $27,337.60
Family Loan #1: $55,460.00
Grand Total: $117,285.56
Yikes!! That's a lot.
So, we will stick with our plan. $1,000 in savings to start the emergency fund. Pay off Family Loan #2. Then increase savings to $2500 then pay off debt. Family Loan #2 was given to us with the intent we would pay it back as soon as possible. We definitely want to honor that so our adjusting our plan slightly for that. Of course, the car will be paid off next month and that will give us a total of $483 to put towards the current goal.
I feel overwhelmed now. I think I'll go to bed. :)
